Kundapur, Nov 26, 2013: Private buses in Kundapur are off the roads on November 26, Tuesday in protest against the assault on a bus driver at Sarpanakatte in Bhatkal on Monday. The injured driver Nityananda is undergoing treatment at the Manipal Hospital.
The strike by the bus crew has hit hard the commuters who have to rely on KSRTC buses which are plying on some routes as an alternate to private buses. On Tuesday, bus services towards Bhatkal, Brahmavar, Udupi and Mangalore have come to an abrupt halt.
According to sources, the APM bus which left Bhatkal at around 5.30 pm on Monday, had knocked down a bike rider at Sarpanakatte. People who rushed to the spot had taken the bus driver Nityananda to task and had brutally assaulted him.
In protest, bus drivers who converged at Shastri Circle at Kundapur on November 26 at 7 am staged a protest till 11.30 am and then took out a procession. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner through Kundapur SI Jayaram D Gowda demanding action against the guilty who took law into their hands.
