Bengaluru, Jan 21, 2022: Karnataka will decide on calls to ease Covid-19 restrictions in the state on Friday following a meeting between the Chief Minister and health experts. This comes as Karnataka registered a steep spike in Covid-19 cases on Thursday.

Covid curbs

Karnataka on Thursday reported 47,754 new cases of Covid-19, and 29 fatalities, taking the tally to 33,76,953 and the death toll to 38,515. The state had recorded 41,457 fresh infections on Tuesday and 40,499 on Wednesday. Of the new cases today, 30,540 were from Bengaluru Urban. The total number of active cases across the state is now 2,93,231.

CM Basavaraj Bommai, who recently recovered from Covid-19, had on Wednesday hinted that restrictions may be eased in the state soon. Revenue Minister R Ashoka, meanwhile, said both lives and livelihood of the people will be considered while arriving at any decision.

Senior BJP legislators Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and M P Renukacharya on Thursday held closed-door discussions, and pushed for a Cabinet rejig, by replacing ineffective Ministers who are in the party only for the sake of power. Both leaders said they have discussed about working towards bringing the party back to power in the 2023 assembly polls.
