Mangalore, Nov 5, 2012: The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy conferred honorary awards for 2011 on Hamza Malar, Ismail Moodushedde, and Ahmed Bava Bajal.
C. T. Ravi, higher education minister and district-in-charge minister for DK, gave away the awards at an awards ceremony organized at Raveendra Kalashetra on Nov 4, Sunday.
The award comprises Rs. 10,000 and a citation. The winners were selected on the basis of their contributions to Beary language, culture, and literature.
Rahim Uchil, academy chairman, said that Ahmed Bava Bajal has served the Beary community in a number of capacities. Journalist Hamza Malar has written extensively and published 32 works so far. Ismail Moodushedde has not only written Beary and Tulu plays, but also directed plays and made films in Beary.
Seven Beary achievers were also felicitated on this occasion. They are K. Mohammed Beary, G. M. Cheriyabba Saab and Razaq (organizers), Shafi Sa’adi (Beary language), K. Mohammed Muneer (social work), Idinabba Beary (writer), and Abdul Razak Harekal (education and health).
Among those present were Assayyid Fazal Koyamma Koorath Thangal; N. B. Aboobakker, chairman of the Karnataka Minorities’ Development Corporation; Rahim Uchil, president of the Kannada Development Authority; Mukyamanthri Chandru; MLA N. A. Haris; Umarabba, registrar of the academy; Abdul Khader; and Lathif Neralakatte.
