Karkala lady doctor falls prey to online fraud ; loses Rs 11.35 lakhs

Karkala, Nov 13, 2013 : In a case of online fraud, a lady doctor from Karkala has lost as much as Rs 11.35 lakhs. She had reportedly remitted the amount to different accounts of a person whom she had come into contact through an online matrimony portal.

online As per the complaint lodged with the Karkala police, Dr K Lavanya Rao (41), an Ayurvedic doctor and daughter of Nagesh Rao had uploaded her profile on the Kannada Bharath Matrimony site. It is said a man identifying himself as Ajmal put forth a marriage proposal to Lavanya on May 5 this year. Ajmal also spoke to Dr Lavanya over internet and won her confidence.

However, soon he made a request to Lavanya for funds saying his father had expired and that he needed money to claim the funds which his father was supposed to get from the Qatar government. Without bothering to check details, Dr Lavanya had remitted money to several accounts of Ajmal in various places including Lucknow, New Delhi, Mumbai, Noida, Hyderabad and other places. It was only when Ajmal demanded more money and even threatened to kill her that Lavanya realised she was cheated.

Investigations are underway.
