Kannada Sahitya Parishad constitutes new award for writers

Udupi, oct 1, 2011 : Nallur Prasad, the president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishad, said that the Parishad has constituted the Kannada Sahitya Parishad Award comprising a cash prize of Rs. 1,11,111 to encourage writers.

 

Addressing reporters after the conclusion of the 2-day conference of Kannada Sahitya Parishad office bearers, he said that the Kannada Sahitya Award will be given away on the basis of achievement alone.

Anybody in the age group of 40 – 45 is eligible for this award, he stated, adding that a committee will be set up exclusively for this award and that Rs. 20 lakh will be earmarked for this purpose.

Speaking about the 78th Akhila Bharat Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, which is scheduled to be held at Gangavathi, he said that preparations are being made for it. The executive committee will select the president of this sammelan by the end of October and a decision has already been taken to hold the sammelan on Nov 18 – 20, he said.

Stating that the government usually releases Rs. 1 crore for this sammelan, he said that the Parishad has urged Laxman Savadi, the district-in-charge minister of Gangavathi, who is also the cooperative minister, to boost this amount by Rs. 1 crore more.

 

He also said that the Parishad and the Karnataka State Open University has jointly taken measures to introduce PG diploma courses in translations, journalism, old Kannada literature, and theatre, adding that plans are afoot for the introduction of M.Phil. and Ph.D. He said that the syllabus is being designed and that the fee structure will be made affordable to everybody. He also said that the board of studies and the board of administration are being set up.

 

Further, he said that the Parishad will organize research workshops worth Rs. 1 lakh in each district.
