Mangalore, Nov 20, 2013: The Dakshina Kannada district administration jointly with Kannada and culture department and Karavali Kurubara Sangha jointly organized ‘Kanakadasa Jayanti’ at town hall on November 20, Wednesday.
A procession was organized to mark the celebrations from Shri Mahaganapati temple to the town hall.
Minister for Youth Services and Fisheries K Abhay Chandra Jain inaugurated the event and said that State government has undertaken many schemes for the welfare of Kuruba Community. It was the state government which declared Kanaka Jayanti as a holiday and has taken the initiative of celebrating Kanaka Jayanti on a grand scale.
He also said that the population of Kuruba community in coastal region may be less, but many people belonging to the community come from various places and work here. Mangalore is also proud to conduct Karavali Kuruba Convention.
Speaking on Kanakadasa, he felt that his messages had great significance for all times. Recalling the poet-saint’s words, he said that Kanakadasa had spoken against the differences in religions and had taught to maintain harmony, by peaceful co-existence among various sections of the society.
MLA Moideen Bawa, additional deputy commissioner Dayanand, ZP member Yashwavanthi Alva, Kannada and Cultural department assistant director Chandrahas Rai, Kuruba Sangha president Ravikumar, vice president Basavaraj Kenguru, treasurer Chandru, secretary Basavraj and many others were present.
