Justice Shivaraj Patil blames poverty, illiteracy for rising HR violation cases

Mangalore, Jan20,2013: Justice Dr Shivaraj V Patil, former Chief  Justice of Supreme Court   has attributed poverty and illiteracy to the rising cases of human rights violations in the country.


Delivering the valedictory address of a workshop on ‘Women and Human Rights’ held at St Agnes College in Mangalore on January 19, Saturday  with the co-operation of the Department of Political Science and Human Rights Cell of the College, Justice Patil said one human rights violation case  occurs in the world every minute.

He further said the number of human rights violation cases that go unreported are much more than the ones which are  reported. He said there was a need for a change in the mindset of the society and people will have to come forward to register complaints.  Justice Patil further said the number of human rights violation cases can be reduced  by creating a social awareness and through  effective enforcement of the law. Even the media can play a pro-active role, he added.


Prof. PL Dharma, Professor in Mangalore University was present as a chief guest.


Dr M Prem D’Souza, Principal of St Agnes College Chandramohan Marathe, Head of the Department of Political Science  and others were present.
