Bangalore, March 9, 2012: A campaigner against the anti-Christian riots in Karnataka, Justice M.F. Saldanha is recovering after a major surgery at a hospital in Bangalore. The former Karnataka High Court Judge was operated upon at the St. Philomena’s hospital in Bangalore yesterday to repair a three-inch tear in his oesophegal tract resulting from coughing and retching.

Earlier, about two liters of fluid was drained from his lungs. Saldanha, who is kept in the ICU ward was stated to be stable till last reports came in.


MF SaldanhaHospital director Sr Teresa, consultant cardiologist Ranga Nayak, Cardiologist Manjunath Desai and Director of Baptist Alex Thomas are monitoring Saldabnha’s case.

Archbishop Emeritus Ignatius Pinto of Bangalore expressed concern over his state of health and would pay a visit to him today.

Saldanha’s wife Marie and brother Mark Saldanha are with him in the hospital.

Saldanha, who had prepared an enquiry commission report on the 2008 anti-Christian riots in the state, said “the Church attack incidents are representative of the hidden agenda of the party in power in the state, the BJP, which is driven by a very strong casteist force.”

He said that every attack and incident which took place was instigated and pre-planned.

“Such incidents should be treated as acts of terror,” he said in his report.
