Journalists’ union stages protests against attacks on media

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Mar 8: “The recent attacks on the offices of 2 Kannada dailies is not just an attack on a particular newspaper, but on every person associated with the media,” said Harish Rai, journalist and secretary of Press Club, speaking at a protest organized in front of the DC office on March 8, Monday, by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Union against attacks on media personnel and property.

Mr. Rai alleged that the police department has not yet taken any action against the offenders in spite of the DK Working Journalists’ Union having submitted a memorandum to IGP of Western Range Gopal Hosur and Superintendent of Police Dr. A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao immediately after the attacks on 2 Kannada dailies “Kannada Prabha” and “Jayakirana.”

The SP had assured that he would create special police teams to investigate the case. However, the identification of the offenders arrested by the police has been concealed from the media and not even an investigation has been conducted. The media, therefore, condemns this act of the police, he said.

The union then submitted a memorandum to DC. Besides condemning the attack on newspapers in its memorandum, the union also expressed its concern over the steady rise in the number of attacks on media personnel and organizations as well as the failure of the police department to investigate the issue.
