Journalist Imthiaz Thumbay granted bail

Mangaluru, Sep 11, 2017 : Kannada daily senior reporter, Imthiaz Thumbay has been granted bail.

 

Bantwal police had arrested Imthias Thumbay for his provocative report on police raid on the residence of the prime accused in the murder of RSS worker, Sharath Madiwala. The raid was held on the residence of the prime accused, Kalandar located at Panolibail Neelya, Sajipamunnur last week. 

The police took the reporter into custody for his provocative report that hurt the sentiments of a particular community.

 

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police (SP) Sudheer Kumar Reddy expressed his dissatisfaction on the report published without varification from the police on the raid .

Accusation against reporter an afterthought: Editor

Denying charges made by the police against the reporter, Editor-in-Chief of Vartha Bharati Abdussalam Puthige said on Monday that accusing the reporter of planting the holy book and circulating it on social media was an “afterthought” and did not figure in the FIR. The paper had published the accusation by Kalandar’s family members and also the rebuttal of the Superintendent of Police, prominently.

Accusing the police of selectively targeting the newspaperand booking the case, Mr. Puthige said the police have not taken action on many provocative speeches and statements.

Moreover, there was no law and order problem following publication of the story on September 3, as alleged by the police.
