As per the Hindu calendar, the day comes after Amavasye in the month of Vaishak, and the Hindu community considers every second of Akshaya Trithiya to be auspicious. It is widely believed that the auspiciousness of the day eliminates the need to search for a muhura. The word “Akshaya” literally means “that which does not diminish.”

The Hindu community believes that the sun and the moon are the most radiant on this day, which makes it a popular date to get married, purchase diamonds and gold, start a new business, and so on.

Akshaya Trithiya is associated with a number of legends, of which the most popular is that of Sudama who visited his classmate Lord Krishna in Dwaraka carrying a gift of beaten rice. It is also considered to be the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Yet another legend has it that the Pandavas received the Akshaya Pathra from Lord Soorya on this day and that Veda Vyasa began composing the Mahabharatha on this day.

Devout Hindus perform special pujas on Askhaya Trithiya, take bath in holy offers, offer charity, perform havans, and worship prominent deities such as Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh.

But Akshaya Trithiya today is associated chiefly with the purchase of gold and diamonds and people wait especially for this day to invest in this yellow metal. The most popular activity on Askhaya Trithiya is the purchasing of gold and diamonds as it is believed that gold and diamonds purchased and worn on this day symbolize good fortune throughout life.
