Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, July 10, 2012: The Janatha Dal (Secular), DK district unit, has vehemently opposed the Yettinahole Project on grounds that it is just an excuse to divert River Nethravathi.

Speaking at a press conference, JD (S) leader M. G. Hegde said that authorities are trying to divert River Nethravathi in spite of the fact that the people of Mangalore suffer sever water shortage during summers. Moreover, diverting the river in this manner is unscientific and several experts have opposed it, he said.

He further said that the JD (S) will not oppose the project if the authorities can supply drinking water to DK for 365 days a year and 24 hours per day. Mr. Hegde also pointed out that the authorities have not yet completed the Thumbe vented dam project.

Turning his attention to the Bejai Market, Mr. Hegde said that fish traders are facing a number of problems because the market is still under construction and no alternative arrangements have been made for them. The foundation stone for this market was laid 5 years back, but no work has been done on the market for the past two and a half years, he said.

He also said that water stagnating in pools at the Bejai Market construction site has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. He demanded that concerned authorities must explain why the work has been stopped and give a complete account of this project to the public.

In response to a reporters’ query on the internal conflict within the BJP, JD(S) President M. B. Sadashiva said that caste politics is at the root of the fight for the chief minister’s chair. Stating that the BJP is now reaping what it sowed, he said that the party tried creating a Hindu vote bank by organizing Hindu Samajotsavas and conveying the message that they do not give importance to caste. He demanded to know why caste has become so important for the BJP right now.
