Include fish in daily diet to tackle malnutrition: Prof. H.P.C. Shetty

Mangalore, Dec 4, 2012 : Including fish n the daily diet is an excellent way of  getting the proteins vital for the body,” said  Prof.H.P.C.Shetty, former chairman of the Asia Fisheries Society, Indian Branch.
He was speaking  after inaugurating the three-day Global Symposium on ‘Aquatic Resources for Eradication of Hunger and Malnutrition - Opportunities and Challenges’ at Milagres Convention Centre in Mangalore on December 3, Monday. The seminar was jointly organized by the Indian Branch of Asia Fisheries Society  and Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University of Bidar.

The symposium aims at bringing experts from fields like human nutrition, medicine, policy makers, aquatic resource management, aquaculture, food processing, and economics under one roof to develop strategies to increase fish production.

Continuing, Prof. Shetty, said fish  also contains all essential amino acids and also omega-3 fatty acids. Citing advantages of fish consumption, he said fish oil is also one of the natural sources of Vitamin D. He also emphasized the need to fight hunger and malnutrition in an effective manner and added there was a greater need to create awareness on the benefits of eating fish which can tackle malnutrition.
The silver jubilee souvenir of AFSIB was also released on the occasion.

Dr C Renuka Prasad, Vice Chancellor, KVAFSU, Bidar,  Aravind Jannu, Principal Secretary, Govt of Karnataka, Dr Kevan L Main, Director and Senior Scientist Mote Marine Laboratory, USA  and several other experts are taking part in the seminar.
