It may be recalled that the elections were scheduled to be held on Oct 4, but were postponed to Oct 12, Friday because of the absence of BJP members.

On Oct 11, the High Court of Karnataka issued a stay order on the election and postponed it by yet another week. The exact date has not yet been confirmed.

On Oct 4, the BJP members of the Udupi ZP boycotted the elections owing to an internal conflict within the party. Since there was no quorum, the election officer had to postpone the elections according to the rules.

K. Diwakar Kunder, a Congress candidate for the post of Udupi ZP president, filed a plea in the High Court, in which he stated that the election ought to have taken place even in case of no quorum according to a government order. The court, therefore, issued a stay order on the elections.

Meanwhile, the BJP has a large internal conflict, which it has been unable to deal with. There are 16 BJP members in the Udupi ZP and half of them turned rebels and demanded representation for Kundapur. The eight rebels, all supporters of Halady Shrinivas Shetty, nominated Prakash V. Mendon and Babu Shetty for the post of president and Mamatha Poojary for the post of vice president. The other 8 members, in the meanwhile, nominated Indira Shetty for the post of vice president and Upendra Nayak for the post of president. Since the party could not solve its internal problems, the members decided to boycott the election of Oct 4.

On Oct 11, Thursday, the BJP had a meeting, heard the rebels, and came to an agreement. They finally nominated Upendra Nayak for the post of president and Mamatha Poojary for the post of vice president.
