Mangalore, sep 22, 2012 : Addressing the gathering at a talk organized by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), MP Oscar Fernandes said that the government of India is considering various possibilities of establishing a knowledge village in DK.
Informing the gathering that the government of India feels that the country requires at least 1,500 more universities, he said that the government is also aware that certain educational institutions use unfair methods and charge exorbitant fees. Establishing more colleges and universities will give students more opportunities and create stiff competition for institutions that charge high capitation fees.
Simultaneously, Mr. Fernandes said that India needs more teachers and lecturers too, adding that the government has relaxed the practice of one guide per student in research. He said that one professor guides up to eight students in some countries, owing to which the ratio has been increased to one professor for two students in India. He also said that the government will make national accreditation mandatory for colleges, giving students the chance to assess quality in each educational institution.
The government is also making attempts to bring the best foreign universities to India through its Foreign Educational Institutions Regulation Act, he said.
KCCI President Mohammed Ameen presented a memorandum to Mr. Fernandes and urged him to consider possibilities of establishing more universities in Mangalore, granting autonomy to more colleges, exempting educational institutions from paying service taxes, constructing connecting roads between Sakleshpur and Gundya, establishing an air cargo complex in Mangalore Airport, and establishing a fishing harbor in Kulai – Hosabettu.
