Mangalore, Nov 14, 2013 : Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the Customs have arrested a passenger at the Mangalore International Airport on November 13 for trying to smuggle gold by concealing it in his footwear, thus revealing that gold smugglers were opting for novel ways in a bid to escape the eyes of the authorities.
The passenger identified as Manir Hassan of Bhatkal had arrived by an Air India Express flight from Dubai. Officials found a gold biscuit weighing 116.64 grams and a gold coin of eight grams in the strap of the footwear on his right foot. The value of the seized gold is estimated at Rs 3,84,744.
Though the officials who acted on a tip off thoroughly searched Manir’s person as well as baggages, they could not find anything. Finally they took his footwear and passed it through the scanner when the gold was detected.
