Gokaranatheshwara College honors Sahana Kumari for sports achievements

Mangalore, July 10, 2012: Sahana Kumari, an athlete of Ullal origins, who recently qualified for the London Olympics, was felicitated at Gokarnatheshwara College on July 9, Monday. Ms. Kumari will represent the country in the long jump event at the London Olympics.

Addressing the gathering after the felicitation, Ms. Kumari, who is an old student of the college, thanked the college for supporting her and encouraging her sports activities. 


In his address, Purushottam Poojary, sports trainer at the college, expressed his appreciation of Ms. Kumari for achieving her sports goals.

Sharing his thoughts on Ms. Kumari, Narasimha Moorthy, lecturer at Gokarnatheshwara College, said that Sahana Kumari had won awards at the national level even during her student days. She would wake up at 5:00 a.m. and practice at Mangala Stadium. Her sister Harishini Kumari is also an athlete, who has achieved great things at the national level. Her brother is an excellent volleyball player. The lecturer said that Sahana Kumari’s parents had encouraged all their three children to excel in sports. 


Further, Mr. Murthy said that Nagaraj, Ms. Kumari’s husband, is an athlete at the international level, who has represented the country at Beijing Olympics in the 100-m sprint and 400-m relay competitions. Mr. Murthy said that Sahana Kumari has the support and encouragement of her husband, who once took part in the Commonwealth Games. 


A purse of Rs. 50,000, half of which was contributed by the college and the other half by Harish Sherigar of Dubai, an old student of the college, was presented to Ms. Kumari on this occasion.
