Gandhi Peace bus arrives in city tomorrow

Mangalore, July 1, 2012: The inter-state Gandhi Peace bus will arrive at Mangalore on 2nd July, 2012, after a 22-days’ journey from Kanyakumari covering along the way, major places visited by Gandhiji and pay homage to the memory of the world’s most celebrated icon of peace.

Gandhi Peace BusThe expedition is organised by Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi in association with the National Foundation for Communal Harmony, Government of India, and the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies, New Delhi.


Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi chairman N. Radhakrishnan says that the main purpose of the expedition was to encourage the youth to follow the routes Gandhi travelled under a well-designed programme. Gandhi visited 394 places between Kanyakumari and Mangalore.


The convoy comprises of a passenger coach, an exhibition van, a tableau with Charka (spinning wheel) and accompanying vehicles. About 40 youth volunteers and 20 Gandhian activists are accompanying the caravan which has travelled across 1200 km visiting 68 historical places immortalized by Gandhiji’s visit. This epic journey involved hosting or participating in 32 Seminars, Discussions and interactions, honouring of Freedom Fighters and Gandhian activists, distribution of Gandhian literature, Anti Violence Oath Taking, spinning wheel live demonstration, Gandhi pictorial exhibition, screening Gandhi films and Gandhi book exhibition. 


Mangalore is the concluding station for the campaign and on arrival the bus will first pay a visit to Gandhi Temple, Garodi, which is the only temple in the world to be dedicated to the Father of the Nation. This will be followed by a valedictory ceremony at Canara Girls’ High School, Dongerkery for which Mahatma Gandhi had laid the foundation stone in 1934.
