Drunk cobbler flees after attempting rape on minor girl

Kundapur, Nov 6, 2013 : In a shocking incident reported from Basrur, a cobbler reportedly attempted to rape an orphan girl in a drunken stupor. The girl was being looked after by his own family. The incident is learnt to have taken place on November 4, Monday.

minor giral 1 The accused is Ponnuraj, a man of Tamil Nadu origin who worked as cobbler in Basrur since the past several years. The orphan girl was adopted by Ponnuraj’s mother and the girl lived with the family even after the demise of the old woman. Ponnuraj too was married and had two children.

It is said on November 4, Ponnuraj who was drunk, tried to molest the girl after allegedly making his wife too consume liquor. Local women who came to know about the heinous act, rescued the girl and took her to a local Women’s Self-Help Group which has offered her shelter.

The accused is absconding.
