Mangalore, Mar 31, 2012 : Dr. TMA Pai Foundation will confer its annual awards for this year on R. V. Deshpande, N. Yogish Bhat, Eknatha K. Thakur, and Saratchandra Shenoy. The foundation confers awards on outstanding members of the Konkani-speaking communities for exemplary service to society.
While the Outstanding Achiever Award will be conferred on Yogish Bhat, R. V. Deshpande, and Eknath Thakur, the Best Konkani Book Award will be conferred on Saratchandra Shenoy.
R. V. Deshpande
Raghunah Rao Vishwanatha Rao Deshpande, popularly known as R. V. Deshpande, is the former minister of large and small scale industries and infrastructure development and the senior leader of the Indian National Congress.
He established the Deshpande Rural Development and Self Employment Training Institute to provide free boarding and education for students of short and medium term courses. The Deshpande Institute of Vocational Training provides high quality vocational training to rural people. The annual national-level wrestling competitions and bullock cart race at Haliyal, which is his initiative, serves to preserve and promote traditional sport.
N. Yogish Bhat
N. Yogish Bhat, MLA of Mangalore South Constituency and deputy speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, is responsible for the renovation of all government schools and PU colleges in his constituency. He also played an active role in the construction of a new Government First Grade College in Car Street.
Eknath Thakur
Eknath K. Thakur, the MP of Rajya Sabha from 2002 – 8, took the initiative of forming the All India Confederation of All Bank Officers in India. He has received a number of awards from social organizations and NGOs.
Saratchandra Shenoy
Mr. Shenoy won the National Award for Konkani Literature in 1999 from the Central Sahitya Academy in New Delhi for his anthology of Konkani poems Antarnad. He has published a number of critiques in special issues, periodicals, and anthologies. He has been honored by a number of social, literary, and cultural associations.
