Mangalore, Oct 29, 2012: Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore Diocese, and Girish Kasaravalli, widely acclaimed Kannada director, were among the 10 people selected to receive the prestigious Alva’s Nudsiri Award 2012.
Alva’s Foundation Chairman Dr. M. Mohan Alva announced the names of the award winners today, stating that a jury had finalized the list according to their contributions toward Kannada.


While the bishop has bagged the award for his contributions to Kannada education, Girish Kasaravalli has bagged it for his contributions to Kannada cinema. The other award winners are Dr. G. Siddalingaiah (literature), Dr. Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji Sanehalli (Kannada culture), Vyjayanthi Kashi (dance and silver screen), Dr. C. P. Krishna Kumar (literature), Dr. Vishnu Naik (literature), Ramachandra Hegde Chittani (Yakshagana), Subhadramma Mansoor (theatre), and Loka Shikshana Trust (publications).
Each award comprises a certificate, a citation, a memento, and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. The winners will receive their awards at the valedictory ceremony of the 9th Alva’s Nudisiri, which is scheduled for Nov 18.
The 3-day cultural event will be inaugurated by Dr. U. R. Anantha Murthy, the litterateur, and will be presided over by Dr. K. S. Nisar Ahmed, well-known poet and litterateur. Erya Laxmi Narayana Alva, senior litterateur, will deliver the valedictory address. The event will comprise 4 main seminars, and Prof. G. Venkata Subbaiah, centenarian and lexicologist, will be felicitated at the inauguration ceremony for his contributions to the Kannada lexicon. The felicitation ceremony will be led by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade.
