Mangalore, Oct 11, 2012: Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore  released the ‘Year of the Faith’ logo at special function organized at Rosario Cathedral, Mangalore on Thursday, October 11, 2012.

Releasing the Year of the Faith logo, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza explained that the logo is designed to renew the faith of Catholics so that they can be witnesses to the risen Lord, capable of leading others to faith.

 

Pope Benedict XVI announced that the Roman Catholic Church will celebrate the year Oct 11, 2012 to Nov 24, 2013 as the Year of Faith in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. 

The beginning of the Year of Faith will coincide with the next general assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will be held in Oct 2012 along the theme of “the new evangelization for the transmission of the Christian faith.”  The goal of the Year of Faith is to foster an encounter with Christ through authentic witnesses to faith and a deeper understanding of the truths of our faith that Jesus revealed. 

The Vatican has suggested that meaningful activities should be conducted to celebrate the Year of Faith at the universal, national, diocesan, and parish levels. On the occasion of the Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XIV has promulgated an apostolic letter on the Year of Faith named Porta Fedei, meaning “door of faith.” 

The Year of Faith will be inaugurated simultaneously in the Vatican City as well as Mangalore Diocese on Oct 11, Thursday. Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore Diocese, will inaugurate the Year of Faith by unveiling the logo of the Year of Faith during Holy Mass at Rosario Cathedral.

Rev. Msgr. Denis Moras, vicar general; Rev. Fr. Henry Sequiera, chancellor; clergy and lay people; and others will take part in the inaugural ceremony. The Year of Faith will be inaugurated in individual parishes on Oct 14, Sunday. The priests will read the Konkani version of the apostolic letter on this occasion. 

Year of Faith Logo

The logo is in the shape of a square with a border on which a boat sails across the waves. The boat symbolizes the church and its main mast is in the form of a cross and the sails are depicted as the trigram of Christ (IHS). A sun, representing the Eucharist, is in the backdrop of the sails.
