Mangalore, May 16, 2012: Delivering the inaugural address after inaugurating a one-day workshop on terrace gardening organized at Bal Bhavan by the horticulture department, the DK district administration, and the Siri Totagaarike Sangha of Mangalore, Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, Zilla Panchayat CEO, said that there are plans to build parks for the disabled in five taluks in DK. 


He also said that the district administration will encourage 500 schools to maintain gardens in their premises with the help of donors. He voiced his opinion that maintaining gardens in schools will enable students to learn better.

Expressing his concern for the decline of horticulture and agriculture in Karnataka, he said that terrace gardening might help bring to life the fading interest in farming in the district. Speaking about the advantages of terrace gardening, he said that people can even grow medicinal plants, vegetables, and fruits in terrace gardens. 


The CEO also voiced his opinion that maintaining gardens in schools will create a natural environment within which students can learn. Students can also grow vegetables and fruits in these gardens, he suggested. 


Dr. S. Nanda, deputy director of the department of horticulture; Laxmi Rao, vice president of Siri Totagaarika Sangha; and Dr. Rajendra Hegde, trainer of the workshop, were also present.
