District administration to ban plastic from Nov 1

Mangalore, Oct 12, 2012 : The district administration will ban the use of plastic in DK in a phased manner, starting Nov 1.


dc 1Announcing the above, Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, deputy commissioner for DK, said that plastic has been banned in Moodubidri on a pilot basis. He was chairing a meeting of several organizations in the city on Oct 11, Thursday.

The DC urged the public to cooperate with the district administration, adding that the ban will be fully implemented only after getting feedback from plastic manufacturers, plastic users, and the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

Stating that plastic carry bags below 40 microns have already been banned in DK, he said that the MCC has been conducting regular raids to identify and penalize those who violate this ban. Besides, college students and various organizations have been creating awareness on the adverse effects of using plastic. The district-in-charge minister has urged officers concerned to initiate measures to effectively ban plastic in the district, he added.

The DC announced that the district administration will study the various pros and cons of banning plastic bags before completely implementing the ban.

Various alternatives to plastics were also discussed during the meeting. The DC said that subsidy will be provided for women’s self-help groups so that they can manufacture cloth bags, adding that care will be taken to make sure that consumers will not be unnecessarily burdened.

Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash, ZP CEO; Dr. Harish Kumar, MCC commissioner; Lakshman, pollution control officer; and many others were also present.
