Subrahmanya, oct 13, 2012: Dr. Channappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner of DK, issued a verbal order staying the ban on burqas in the premises of Shri Kukke Subrahmanyeshwara College, a few days back. He urged Principal Dinesh Kamath to maintain status quo on the issue.
The principal, however, was in a dilemma when the management committee of the college, in utter defiance of the DC’s verbal order, implemented the burqa ban once again. Since he could not understand whether he had to obey the college management committee or the district administration, the Muslim girl students were forced to remove their burqas outside the college gates before entering the college premises.
The girl students had complained that members of the public and male students used to make undesirable comments and even capture their pictures on mobile phones when they were wearing their burqas outside the college gates.
On Thursday, a notice was put up on the college notice board that the burqa ban would continue as there was no written order from the district administration.
On Oct 12, Friday, the joint director of collegiate education issued a written order stating that the management committee’s order has been suspended till further notice. The order was displayed on the college notice board, and students were told that the burqa ban has been removed.
