Mangalore, Aug 7: Karnataka State Devadiga Sangha and Dubai Devadiga Sangha organized a scholarship distribution programme for economically backward merit students at Devadiga Sangha Hall in Mannagudda on Aug 7 Sunday.
Entrepreneur Harish Sherigar was the chief guest of the event. Speaking of the importance of education and urging people to donate for the cause of providing education to the poor and the underprivileged, he said that those interested can visit www.devadiga.com to find out more about the association’s philanthropic activities.
An amount of Rs. 39,375 obtained as interest from a deposit of Rs. 5 lakh made by Harish Sherigar was distributed as scholarships among deserving students. A number of other donors had also contributed to the cause.
SDM College Principal Dr. Devaraj K. was also the chief guest of the event.
The organizers had received 159 applications for scholarships, of which 135 were from SSLC students and the others were from PU and Degree students. Students from Udupi, Bhatkal, Karkala, and Mangalore obtained scholarships.
President Dinesh Devadiga presided, Vice President Vaman Maroli delivered the welcome address, and a number of people such as Sharmila Sherigar, Veni Maroli, Shekar Devadiga, and others were the dignitaries on the dais.
