Death of 2 new borns in Ladygoschen triggers protest

Mangalore, Feb 1, 2013: Tension prevailed at the Ladygoschen Hospital in Mangalore on February 1, Friday when some people   blamed medical negligence for the death of new borns in the hospital. The allegation in the backdrop of death of two new borns in the hospital.

The problem arose when the parents of one of the dead child took the body to the Nandigudda crematorium when the authorities there said that this was the sixth body of a baby brought for cremation in the past few days.

 

Agitated and shocked, the parents returned to the hospital protested and alleged that medical negligence led to the death. One of the women who was present at the hospital said her daughter lost her baby as the hospital did not undertake necessary tests before delivery. There was also an allegation that doctors were demanding bribe for providing good treatment and that only those who greased their palms got good medical treatment.

DYFI leader Muneer Katipalla who too was present at the hospital alleged that the poor patients were not getting proper treatment. However, the Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Shakuntala refuted the allegations and said in case of the death of the baby on Friday, the baby had died in the womb of its mother itself. She also admitted that sometimes babies cannot be saved as there would be delay in arrival of the women to hospital after they are referred from hospitals in the outskirts.

She also made it clear that the hospital had good facilities and added hot water facility to patients would be introduced soon.

The situation in the hospital was brought under control by the Bunder police who arrived at the spot.
