Mangalore, Sep 5, 2011: The DK Zilla Panchayat, the Public Education Department, the DK District Level Teachers’ Day Committee, and Mangalore City Zonal Teachers’ Day Committee celebrated Teachers’ Day at the district level. A felicitation ceremony formed part of this event, which also marks the 123rd birth anniversary of Sarvapalli Radhakrishna at Town Hall on September 5, Monday.

District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated the event and said that DK is now an educational hub, adding that the Joint Review Mission survey reveals that DK holds the 20th place with regard to education in India.

Warning against the infiltration of western influences in India education, he said that teachers in India will always be respected even if they retire.

Speaking against the allotment of election duties to teachers, which simply overburden teachers, he said that the election commission should stop this practice as it prevents teachers from giving high quality education to students.

Further, he said that the state government has sanctioned Rs. 12,000 crore for education for the first time in the state’s history. Voicing his opinion that teachers who protest lose their reputation, he urged the state government to pay the teachers on time.

Dr. Dayanand Rai, the state-level award winner for 2010 – 11, who teaches at Navodaya High School in Puttur was felicitated on this occasion. Besides, 12 district-level award winners from primary as well as high schools were honored with fruits, shawls, mementos, bouquets, and citations.

Speaking on the occasion, Captain Ganesh Karnik, who was the chief guest of the event, said that no other state in India spends as much on education as Karnataka does. Simultaneously, he criticized the government for not paying the teachers on time while all other departments are promptly paid on the first of every month. He said that if the state government treats teachers respectfully, the education department in Karnataka will flourish.

N. Yogesh Bhat, the deputy speaker, presided over the event. ZP President Shailaja Bhat, MLA U. T. Khader, Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak, and many other prominent citizens of Mangalore also participated in the event.
