DK ZP bags Rs. 25 lakh award under PEAIS

Mangalore, April 5, 2012 : The DK Zilla Panchayat has been selected by the union government’s Department of Panchayath Raj and Rural Development for an award of Rs. 25 lakh under the Panchayats Empowerment and Accountability Incentive Scheme (PEAIS), making it the only ZP in the state to win this award.

The DK Zilla Panchayath, the Laila Gram Panchayath in Belthangady, and the Puttur Taluk Panchayath sent proposals for the award. The state government sent Myrada, a Bangalore-based NGO, to cross check these proposals and submit a report based on its findings.

As per the Myrada report, the state government recommended the DK Zilla Panchayath for the award under PEAIS, the only ZP in the state recommended by the state government for this award. The union government’s Panchayath Performance Assessment Committee (SPPAC) also visited DK to find out if the ZP was really worthy of these awards.

According to the SPPAC report, the union government accepted the state government’s recommendation and selected the panchayath for the award. Factors such as functioning of the Panchayath Raj bodies, implementation of development projects, social auditing, and others were considered while making the selection. Besides, factors such as skill development, personnel management, annual action plan, conducting regular meetings, five year plans, resource mobilization, transparency, fiscal management, and many others were also considered, said ZP CEO Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash.
