Curtains fall on 4-day theatre festival Jailinda Jailige Rangayatre

Mangalore, July 6, 2012: The Jailinda Jailige Rangayatre, a 4-day theatre festival from the prisoners for the prisoners, came to an end on July 5, Thursday.

Around 80 prisoners from prisons all over the state entertained the city’s theatre lovers with four plays, written by prominent playwrights such as Chandrashekar Kambhar, William Shakespeare, and Chandrashekar Patil. The prisoners who played roles in these plays were from jails in Mysore, Bellary, Bangalore, and Dharwad. They will now go to Bangalore to present their biggest performance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Revealing behind-the-scene experiences, Hulugappa Kattimani of Sankalpa Theatre Group, who trained the prisoners, said that it was very difficult to get the men and the women prisoners to perform together. He said that getting the permission of prison authorities to permit men and women prisoners to practice together was very difficult. Initially, the men and the women prisoners practiced separately in their barracks. When asked to perform together, they were too uncomfortable to even face one another as they were not used to it.

Speaking on the occasion, D. Dharmayya, deputy commissioner of police (crime), expressed his appreciation of Sankalpa, adding that the prisoners were not acting for money, but because they love theatre.

The prisoners performed the play Gokarnada Goudashyani by Chandrashekar Kambar on the last day.
