Court remands trio accused of drug peddling to judicial custody

Ganja 24 aug 2011Mangalore, August 24: A local court has remanded three people arrested for illegal possession of ganja at Kottara Chowki to judicial custody. The police had collected a lot of information regarding their accomplices while interrogating the three. 


A police team under the leadership of Sub Inspector P. Shetty of Urwa Police Station arrested Daakappa (35) and Shivappa (30) of Ananthpur and Puneeth Shetty of Shakthi Nagar. The police also confiscated 800gms of ganja, a Maruthi zen worth Rs. 5 lakh, and five mobile phones from the trio, who remained in police custody for 3 days. 


The police have confirmed that Puneeth Shetty’s car was extensively used to peddle drugs. Puneeth had targeted four colleges in Mangalore and was selling ganja under the secret code “score.” 


Stating that the number of drug addicts in the region is high, the police say that they have received information regarding many more people involved in drug peddling. During the last week, police arrested 4 students on grounds of peddling ganja in different parts of Mangalore. 


A police officer said that anybody caught with less than a kilogram of ganja on his/her person faces a sentence of 6 months in prison and fines of Rs. 10,000. If a person is caught with more than a kilogram of ganja, the law will sentence him/her with 10 years in prison and fines of Rs. 1 lakh. If a person is arrested twice for the same offence, he/she can get life imprisonment. He also said that the use if illicit drugs is a punishable offence.
