Contaminated milk rumors baseless and false – Raviraj Hegde

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Aug 20, 2012: Following widespread rumors that miscreants have contaminated Nandini milk, Raviraj Hegde, president of the DK Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (DKCMPF), called an emergency press meet to assure the public that these are just baseless rumors and that Nandini milk is unadulterated and safe for use.

Mr. Hegde told reporters on August 20 Monday that certain media persons and individuals had used text messages to spread baseless rumors that some miscreants have contaminated Nandini milk. He complained that certain anti-social elements were creating a public nuisance and trying to create fear in the minds of the public.

He declared that the rumors are baseless and false. Further, he stated that the DKCMPF has been awarded the ISO 22000-2005 certification, adding that Nandini milk is scientifically processed and checked for quality every day.

Speaking about the rumors, he said that they started spreading in the night of August 19, Sunday in several parts of Karnataka and spread to DK on Monday morning. Since it was Eid, over 2.5 lakh consumers purchased 3.36 lakh liters of milk, but no untoward incident has been reported so far.

DKCMPF members and others present drank milk straight from Nandini packets in front of the media. They also took reporters on a tour of Nandini’s manufacturing and packaging units and explained exactly how Nandini processes its milk and checks for quality.

When a reporter wanted to how and where the rumors originated, Mr. Hegde said that nothing is known, but the federation had lodged a police complaint. He said that the police have inspected the diary and are trying to identify the source of the rumors.

Stating that DKCMPF has been supplying milk for the past 25 years, he said that this is the first time such a thing has happened. Nandini milk is famous for its quality, he added.

Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh had earlier stated that action will be taken against those who spread such rumors. As the number of messages that can be sent per day is restricted to only 5, the task of the police ought to become easier. Obviously, the people most affected by these rumors are the dairy farmers.
