Mangalore, August 18, 2012: Oscar Fernandes, general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), interacted with North East Indian and Tibetan students at a special confidence-building meeting held at St. Aloysius College and M. V. Shetty College on August 18, Saturday.
Addressing the students, he said that North East Indian students are leaving Bangalore in large numbers because of a rumor that an Assamese student was assaulted by a mob in Bangalore. He assured the students that these are just rumors and, therefore, not true.
He also assured the students that he will urge the central government to help the Government of Assam in all ways, adding that he will help students who have suffered any loss or damage because of these incidents.
He advised students not to forward any threatening SMS they might receive as it will only create more panic in the student community. The police department will identify offenders who send such text messages and take action against them, he added.
He also urged students not to leave the city. Congress leaders such as Naveen D’Souza, P. V. Mohan, T. K. Sudhir, and MLA U. T. Khader were also present.
