Complaints pour in regarding Belthangady Government Hospital

Mangalore Today News Network

Belthangady, Aug 23, 2011 : The people of Belthangady as well as their representatives knew that things were not going on in a legal manner at the Belthangady Government Hospital. There have been a number of complaints regarding negligence on the part of the medical staff and harassment of the poor villagers who visit the hospital to get treated there free of cost.

medican1According to local sources, two boxes of medicines from the hospital were loaded on a tempo to be sold. Reporters as well as Chandrakala, the ZP member rushed to the spot to learn the truth; but by the time they reached the hospital, the tempo had left and the hospital staff said that the tempo had disposed some hospital waste.

The Taluk Panchayat had once raided the hospital in response to complaints that the hospital staff was receiving bribes. The Lokayukta and the ministers had also visited the hospital recently, expressing their resentment at the way the hospital was being maintained and the apathetic attitude of its staff.

Sometime back, a woman had lodged a complaint with the local legislator that the medical officer of the hospital had refused to treat her. Although the MLA called up the doctor, the doctor said that he was busy at an operation theatre and that he will call back later. When the MLA called the woman immediately after his call to the doctor, he learned that the doctor was sitting in his office with the woman.

All this indicates that higher officials and leaders in the health department have not taken any concrete steps to put things right at the hospital.
