Mangalore, Apr 5, 2012: Christians all over Mangalore observed Maundy Thursday on April 5 Thursday.
At Rosario Cathedral, Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, offered mass in the evening, with Fr. Stanly Goveas, the parish priest, Fr. Roshan, and Fr. Alwyn Serrao concelebrating.
Explaining the significance of Maundy Thursday, the bishop said that it conveys the message of service, love, and sacrifice.
The faithful were present in large numbers in churches all over the city.
The priests in various parishes broke bread and distributed it among the altar boys in commemoration of the Last Supper of Lord Jesus Christ. They also performed the ritual of washing the feet of disciples in a bid to humble themselves and to commemorate Jesus’ act of washing the apostles’ feet.
Maundy Thursday is the day on which Jesus shared his last supper with his apostles. This day is followed by Good Friday, the day on which Jesus died; Holy Saturday; and Easter Sunday, the day on which he rose from the dead.
