Mangalore, Mar 13, 2012: MV CMB Pomerol, a bulk carrier belonging to M/s Pacific Bridge Shipping Corporation of the Republic of Panama, called at New Mangalore Port with a load of 89,794 metric tons of coal, the largest consignment of coal ever handled by the post.
The carrier vessel was received on behalf of the port management and Eduard H. Mondres was welcomed with a garland of flowers.
This consignment of coal was imported from South Africa for M/s Jindal Steel Limited and was discharged at NMP’s deep draft berth with the help of harbour mobile cranes. The vessel was at the port for four days, after which it sailed off.
NMPT is witnessing an great growth of coal traffic during this fiscal year. In 2011 – 12, the port handled 3.40 million tons of coal as against the 2.61 million tons handled during the same time in the previous fiscal year, recording a 30.5 percent growth.
