Mangalore, Aug 27, 2012: The Communist Party of India – Marxist organized a protest in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) office at Lalbagh on August 27, Monday against the civic body’s ineffective garbage disposal techniques.

The political party also organized a protest rally as part of this protest. It began from Kankanady, Hampankatta, Yeyyadi, Urwa, and Nanthoor simultaneously and ended at the office of the MCC.

In his protest address, Sunil Kumar Bajal said that the civic body has failed to implement an effective garbage disposal program in the city. Although the civic body collects house tax, which also includes garbage collection tax, it still collects an extra Rs. 30 from each house as garbage collection fees. Besides, the civic body is unable to manage the garbage properly, he said.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, B. Madhava, CPI (M) district secretary, said that the civic body has also failed in effectively controlling rat fever, dengue, malaria, and other health related disorders. The city lacks proper storm water drains and footpaths, making it very difficult for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Further flaying the MCC for its failure to grant housing licenses to the people, he said that people in Bangalore can easily build houses. He demanded to know why the MCC is not granting people the license to build a house in Mangalore while it is so easy in Bangalore.

Criticizing the civic body for spending over Rs. 1.5 crore on the construction of an air-conditioned conference hall, he said that the MCC has failed to provide basic facilities for the people of Mangalore. Besides, the MCC is known for its habit of ignoring protest meetings, he complained.

In his protest address, Vasanth Achar, president of the CPI(M), said that the Congress and the BJP are equally corrupt. Although the Congress criticizes the BJP in public, members of both parties meet in Kadri Park to share the wealth they have together looted from the public, he alleged. Although politicians assure people that they will make Mangalore green and beautiful, they are unable to implement an effective garbage disposal scheme for the city, he said.

He also alleged that the MCC dumps applications for houses submitted by homeless people into its dustbin, adding that the MCC is not permitting people to construct houses on their small sites because most BJP leaders are into real estate.

Criticizing both BJP and Congress, he said that they are like two faces of the same coin, adding that the mayor is a Congress member and the deputy mayor is a BJP member. Recalling the incident in which CITU and CPI (M) members had met DC Ponnuraj, he had assured them that houses will be built for the poor on government land, but the BJP transferred him from Mangalore as soon as it came to know of this.

He warned that the CPI (M) will set up tents in Kadri Park and the golf track at Pilikula if houses are not granted for the poor immediately.
