CM Jagadish Shettar inaugurates renovated MCC conference hall

Mangalore, August 25, 2012: Jagadish Shettar, chief minister of Karnataka, inaugurated the renovated conference hall of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) at Lal Bagh on August 25, Mangalore.

Speaking on the occasion, Shankar Bhat, former mayor of Mangalore, said that many people had opposed the proposal to renovate the conference hall till it was finally realized that the civic body required a full fledged conference hall.

Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of the event, the CM said that this is his first visit to Mangalore after becoming the chief minister of Karnataka, adding that the civic body looks like the crown of the city after its office got a face lift. He also spoke of the need to provide continuous drinking water supply to the people of Mangalore, adding that continuous water supply schemes have already been implemented in 8 districts such as Belgaum, Hubli, Gulbarga, and others.

Speaking on the Endosulphan issue, he said that the government has banned the use of Endosulphan because it is dangerous to human health and the environment. Stating that a global ban was imposed on the manufacture and use of this chemical in 2011, he said that he has met Endosulphan affected people and empathized with them. He also said that affected people will be adequately compensated and rehabilitated, adding that Dr. Veerendra Heggade has started a special day care centre for Endosulphan victims and that the government has earmarked Rs. 28 lakh for it. He also said that the government will find a permanent solution for the Endosulphan problem.

Regarding drought-hit areas, he said that the central committee, which visited all the drought-hit areas, is coming to Bangalore. Stating that the government is trying to solve problems of farmers, he said that he will meet farmers and compensate them adequately.

Speaking about the home stay attack, he said that the government has received the state women’s commission’s report, adding that the guilty will be severely punished.

The minister was accompanied by Housing and Urban Development Minister S. Suresh Kumar, District-in-charge Minister C. T. Ravi, Deputy Speaker Yogish Bhat, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mayor Gulzar Banu, IGP Prathap Reddy, DC Dr. Channappa Gowda, MLC Captain Ganesh Karnik, and Deputy Mayor Amitakala.
