Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Mar 22, 2012: The CITU organized a protest in front of the DC’s office on March 22 Thursday demanding that pure drinking water should be supplied to all people, in commemoration of World Water Day.

In his protest address, the secretary of the CPI (M) said that people in several parts of DK do not get drinking water. People living in places such as Amblamogaru, Munnur, Harekala, Konaje, Belma, Manjanady, Boliyar, Kotekar, Talapady, and Someshwar leave their workplace early just to fetch water for domestic purposes.

Although Mangalore and Ullal have public water taps, they cannot satisfy everybody’s water requirements, he said, adding that government documents prove that certain areas in Bantwal and Belthangady have been converted into deserts. Since Belthangady is facing severe water scarcity, the number of bore wells is on the rise.

K. R. Shriyan, the state secretary of the CPI (M), said that although the three coastal districts have excellent agricultural land, they do not have enough water for agricultural purposes. DK has 10 small and big rivers that flow continuously and if small dams are constructed across them, water can be provided for the entire district.

CPI (M) workers Vasanth Achari, Sunil Kumar Bajal, and others participated in the one-day protest.
