Mangalore, July 11, 2012 : The Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU) organized a protest in front of the DC’s office on Tuesday, during which they placed several demands before the union government. Chief among these demands is the demand for a minimum wage of Rs. 10,000 approved first in the 15th Indian Labour Conference and again in the 44th Indian Labour Conference held recently.

Delivering the protest address on the occasion, CITU Vice President B. Madhava alleged that the union government is in favor of capitalists, and not the working classes. He said that PM Manmohan Singh has declared $10,000 crore as financial support for the IMF so that the financial crisis in western countries can be solved. Besides, the union government has given a concession of Rs. 5000 lakh crores for European countries.

Regarding the contract system of hiring labourers, Mr. Madhava said that the government must implement the Contract Labour Prohibition Act at the earliest possible and give contract labourers all the rights of permanent labourers.

Flaying the union government for hiking the price of essential commodities, he said that the UPA has increased the price of petrol at least 18 times and has not decreased customs duty, owing to which the prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed.

Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Kumar Bajal, CITU secretary, said that the union government must provide land for labourers and give facilities such as minimum wages, minimum pension of Rs. 1,500 per month, and ID cards to contract labourers. Accusing the government of ignoring labourers’ issues, he said that CITU will organize multi-day protests in future.
