Mangalore, October 25, 2010: Workers’ Association Leader Ivan D’Souza said that all city, service, and inter-state buses as well as private vehicles will stay away from the roads on Oct 27, Wednesday. He was addressing reporters at a press conference held at Hotel Woodlands by the Bus Owners Association on Oct 25, Monday.

Since NH 17 is the busiest highway in the state, it is impossible to use it when it is in such a state of disrepair, he said. The authorities have so far chosen to ignore all pleas and complaints; and the strike is to demand the immediate repair of this NH 17 stretch.

Vehicles will not ply from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Pumpwell to Talapady. The protestors will also organize a padayatra from Nanthoor to Thokkottu, commencing from 9:00 a.m.; and throughout the yatra, the protestors will address the public. Only important vehicles such as milk vans, school buses, and ambulances will be allowed to ply along the roads, he said.

The bus owners have decided to support this strike, said Ivan D’Souza.
