Mangaluru, Jul 30, 2021: A press note from the Bondel St Lawrence Shrine in the city has announced "Maha-fest, and Decennial Celebrations" starting on August 01, 2021 and culminating on August 10. On August 1st there would be flag-hoisting at 5.45 p.m., the famous doctor of Bondel area Dr Sathish Kallimar by hoisting the flag will inaugurate the festival celebrations. There will be Novena daily in the evenings at 6 p.m. The various priests of the deanery will celebrate the Mass and conduct the St Lawrence devotion.

On August 10 there will be a festive celebration of  Patron St Lawrence and Decennial Celebration. The emeritus Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, will offer a festive mass at 10.00 a.m. The concluding festive mass will be offered by Rev. Dr. Pius James D’Souza, the provincial of Carmelite order.    A warm  welcome is extended  to all the devotees.

BRIEF RECAP: St Lawrence Church, Bondel : A parish of the Diocese of Mangalore. It is situated 8 kms away from the City on the road to Mangaluru International Airport. It is a place of traditional importance surrounded by Pacchanady, Moodushedde, Marakada, Kavoor and Padavinangadi villages. This parish was established April 10 1923. Though it began small it now serves nearly 1000 families. This Parish has received the service of 10 parish priests, more than 23 Assistant priests who were able and dynamic. Under their leadership the parish has grown in all ways. Rev. Fr Andrew D’ Souza is the present Parish Priest.

A French missionary priest Rev. Fr Alexander Dubois known as ’Frad Saib’ (Then PP of Milagres) visited this place in the year 1873 and seeing the natural beauty of this place he called this place as “Bon valle”, A French term meaning ’good valley’ (Konkani: Borem Falkay) and hence this place is popularly known as Bondel.

This active church parish is surrounded by the religious houses like Missionary Society of Infant Jesus, Sacred Heart Fathers & Brothers of Betharram SCJ, Mary Immaculate Convent, Presentation Convent, Bala Yesu Nilaya Convent, Vijayamari Convent, Jyothi Nivas Convent and Nazareth Niwas. Most of the people here have an agricultural background, there are also businesspersons, and those working abroad too. It has a long history of around 90 years.
