Mangalore, May 18, 2012 : Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, laid the foundation stone for the new Church of St. John the Baptist in Kokkada on May 17, Thursday.
Fr. Gerald D’Souza, vicar of Puttur deanery; Fr. Ronald Lobo, parish priest of Kokkada; Fr. Melwyn Lobo, assistant parish priest; Cyril D’Souza, vice president of the parish council; John Coelho, secretary; Anil Lobo, the engineer; and Melwyn Correa, the contractor, were also present.
The parish of Kokkada, established in 1918, now has 210 families. Besides, it also includes 80 families in Nellyady, the home of the Infant Jesus Chapel where masses and novenas are conducted on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Since the old church building cannot accommodate the rising population, the parish council decided to build a new church.
