Bio-diversity conservation programmes must be conducted at Gram panchayath level: K. S. Sugara

Mangalore, Nov 28, 2013: K. S. Sugara, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and member secretary, Karnataka Bio-diversity Board said that science and management of bio-diversity is a complex issue, hence it requires more number of anthropologists, sociologists, economists, lawyers and biologists to take a right decision and frame perfect policies.

 

 

Delivering the keynote address at a trainers’ training programme held on the topic on ‘Mainstreaming conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants diversity in Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand’ at Hotel Gold Finch on Nov 28, Thursday, he said that bio-diversity conservation science has changed from conservation to community centered, logic to legal and policy to practice.

Sugara said that people must follow the law pertained to Bio diversity conservation present in our country, since 70 percent of population are dependent on the resources gained from environment.

He also said that the conservation awareness programmes must be conducted from the Gram panchayath level. He also urged the NGO’s and social workers to create awareness among the various organizations.

Around 31 BMC representatives and NGO members from Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand were trained on developing linkages on conservation with livelihood actions at BMC level, learning from case studies on conservation of bio-diversity in Western Ghats region.

Sanjay Bijjur, Chief Conservator of Forests, Mangalore Circle, DCF Palayya, Dr Subhash Chandran, Pilikula Nisargadhama training division  dir3ector Dr K V Rao were the chief guest.
