Mangalore, Nov 19, 2013: Beedi workers under the aegis of CITU staged a nation-wide protest in front of DC office on Nov 19, Tuesday demanding minimum wage of Rs 200 for every 1000 beedis rolled.
Addressing the protestors, CITU leader Ramani Moodbidri said that the public representatives who make several promise to the beedi workers during the election campaign, neglect their issue after being elected.
CITU senior leader K R Sriyan said that hike in the price of commodities has made the beedi workers suffer to lead their daily life.
The protesters also demanded the government to provide provident fund for beedi workers, scholarship to their children till 8th standard, provide BPL cards, stop contract and sub-contract system.
They also demanded to provide 6 days of guaranteed job for beedi workers in a week, provide ID cards, provide 35 kg rice at Rs 2 per kg for all the beedi workers families.
