BJP leaders demand legal action against MLC Ivan D’Souza for controversial statement

Mangaluru, August 19, 2024: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, along with Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath and Mangaluru City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty, has called for the police to file a suo motu case against MLC Ivan D’Souza and Congress workers after a protest turned violent on Monday. The BJP leaders accused the Congress members of pelting stones at a bus during the protest, which resulted in injuries to a passenger.

Ivan Dsouza controversial statement

The protest was organized by the Congress against Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s approval to prosecute Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the MUDA allotment scam. During the agitation, MLC Ivan D’Souza made a controversial statement, warning that Karnataka could experience a situation similar to that of Bangladesh if the Governor was not recalled. This remark prompted BJP leaders to demand immediate action.

Capt Brijesh Chowta described D’Souza’s statement as provocative, accusing the Congress of inciting violence in the district. “The City Commissioner of Police, Anupam Agrawal, should initiate legal proceedings against the MLC. Are Congress leaders being influenced by anti-national elements from Pakistan and Bangladesh?” Chowta questioned.

MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty echoed this sentiment, insisting that all Congress workers responsible for the stone-pelting incident should be arrested and charged without delay.

MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath also condemned D’Souza’s comments, suggesting that they were made to appease Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Kamath pointed out that in the past, the police in Mangaluru had booked a case against Dr Bharath Shetty when he was not even part of a protest against a private school. “Now, they should take similar action against MLC Ivan D’Souza for threatening to incite violence reminiscent of Bangladesh,” Kamath added.
