BJP corporators and MCC officials walk out after elections

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Mar 7, 2012: When BJP corporators and MCC officials vacated the premises of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) after the elections for various standing committees on March 7 Wednesday, furious Congress corporators alleged that the BJP had broken the age-old tradition of formally handing over power to the new mayor.

The fact that the mayor’s gown was found missing made the situation more interesting, with Congress members accusing BJP members of having stolen it. The council meeting held after the election was attended by Congress corporators, four corporators belonging to the JD (S) and the CPI (M), and two independent corporators.

Congress corporator Harinath flayed the BJP for not congratulating the deputy mayor on her victory.

Congratulating the new mayor, independent corporator Mariamma Thomas wanted to know if MCC officials had joined the BJP as they too had vacated the MCC premises immediately after the committee elections. She also said that an enquiry ought to be conducted on projects launched during the tenure of the former mayors as they were launched for the benefit of certain parties.

Ashraf, the former mayor, alleged that BJP candidate for the mayor’s post Roopa D. Bangera was a victim of internal conflicts within the BJP.
