Arrangements made for Udupi – Chikmagalur by polls

Mangalore, March 14, 2012: Suranjan, the chief electoral officer of Karnataka, told reporters that all arrangements have been made for the Udupi – Chikmagalur by polls, which are to be held on March 18.

Addressing the press in the DC’s office at Manipal, he said that Udupi – Chikmagalur constituency has a total of 1253580 voters, of whom 6,11,296 are women and 64,22,284 are men. He said that 1630 polling booths will be set up for four assembly constituencies in Chikmagalur, of which 251 are in hypersensitive areas and 751 are in sensitive areas.


Election Commission

 

A total of 8,998 government employees will be deployed to ensure that the by polls are conducted in a smooth, orderly, and peaceful manner. There will be 672 micro observers, 240 videographers, and 4 observers.

A total of 5000 security personnel, including personnel from the DAR and KSRP forces, have been deployed to maintain law and order during the by polls. 97 percent voters hold photo identity cards. Voters can also produce any of the 16 identification proofs with photographs before they can be allowed to cast their votes, he said.

Further, he said that political parties have been urged not to conduct any public rallies and campaign in public after 5:00 p.m. on March 16. Those who are not voting are to leave the constituency on the evening of May 16. Liquor is not to be sold from March 16 to March 18, he added.

The constituency comprises 8 assembly units—Karkala, Udupi, Kundapur, and Kaup in Udupi and Mudigere, Sringeri, Tarikere, and Chikmagalur in Chikmagalur, he said.

Manohar, the special electoral officer; Shamaiah, the deputy electoral officer; Dr. M. T. Reju, the Udupi district deputy commissioner; D. K. Rangaswami, the deputy commissioner of Chikmagalur district; Boralingaiah, the superintendent of police for Udupi; Shashikumar, the superintendent of police for Chikmagalur; Perumal, the election observer; and Kumar, the additional DC, were also present on the occasion.
