Mangalore, Aug 6, 2011 :Archie Sequeira, a Mangalore-born bridge player who lives in Mumbai, will represent India Seniors as a member of India Blues led by Ashok Ruia at the Bermuda Bowl World Bridge Championships, which are scheduled to be held in Holland in Oct 2011.

 

achiver 1The India Blues comprise Ashok Ruia, Archie Sequeira, Subash Gupta, Kamal Roya, R. A. Agarwal, and V. M. Lala.

Archie, who is actually Archelius Sequeira, started participating in bridge competitions in the early seventies when Orlando Campos was one of the best bridge players in India. By the eighties, Archie was an accomplished bridge player.

He has won the Ubhayakar National Pairs with Desmond Fernandes, the Guru Dutt Trophy for inter state bridge with R. Shridhara, Tolani Master Pairs with Desmond Fernandes, and Johnson and Johnson Inter Pharma Bridge Tournament. He has also been the runner up in Ruia Gold Cup with Anil Padhye.

In 2002 and 2008, he won the National Holkar Pairs with Raju Arondekar and Finton Lewis, respectively. Archie also played at Miami in 1986, Geneva in 1991, and Albuquerque in 1995.

In 2006, his team won the Commonwealth Bridge Championship in Melbourne, Australia. That year, Archie also emerged as the finalist in the World Pairs at Verona, Italy with A. Agarwal.

Archie, who was born in Kulshekar, Mangalore, studied at Padua High School and graduated from St. Aloysius College, securing the second rank. In 1960, he moved to Mumbai and secured an LLB degree from Mumbai University. Although he cleared the IAS, he declined an offer in the allied services since he was interested only on IAS/IFS. He completed LLM from Mumbai University and worked for Johnson and Johnson from which he retired as corporate manager HSE in 2000.
