Mangalore, Mar 11, 2012: Lankesh 77 was held in the auditorium of St. Aloysius College on March 11 Sunday in commemoration of the 77th birthday of late P. Lankesh, the writer, journalist, and movie director. 


Devanuru Mahadeva, the writer, addressed the gathering and said that it is the need of the hour to rejuvenate culture and eliminate corruption. Criticizing the BJP-led state government, he said that voters must take care to vote for the right person and that the upcoming Udupi – Chikmagalur by polls are a great opportunity for voters to bring the state out of the mess of corruption.

Presiding over the occasion, writer Gowri Lankesh said that Lankesh had always said that journalism is a tool to be used to teach, entertain, and awaken. She said that she would like to add “to create changes in society” to the list. She also opined that journalism must join hands with activism. 


Suresh Bhat Bakrabailu unveiled the books Panchali, Nanna Preethiya Bharatha, and Helutthene Kela on this occasion. 


The first session of the day will be based on the topic Problems Faced by the Coast. Sara Abubakker, the Kannada litterateur, will preside over the session. While G. Rajashekhar will begin the proceedings, the main lectures will be delivered by Bhoomi Gowda and Vittal Hegde. Dr. H. S. Anupama, P. V. Mohan, Hayavadana Upadhyaya, and Vasudeva Belle will participate in the discussion. 


The second session titled Anxieties of Karnataka will be presided over by Rajaram Tolpady. The introduction will be delivered by K. Phaniraj and the main lectures will be delivered by B. M. Basheer and Dr. H. Vasu. Those participating in the discussion will be Vivekananda Tandela, Vasanth Bannadi, and Aravind Chokkady.
